Taobao, China's biggest online retail website, is offering hacked Apple iTunes store accounts for sale according to reports.

The accounts contain detailed information including the credit card numbers of the registered account owners, enabling purchasers of the breached accounts to buy music, movies, games and other products.

More than fifty-thousand accounts are reported to be for sale currently, and thousands more have already been sold in recent months.

Taobao claims it takes all necessary precautions to protect consumers, but that they can not remove the compromised accounts unless they receive formal requests to remove the advertisements.

"At this time, we have not received any information from Apple or any other principal related to the iTunes accounts indicating that these products either violate our listing rules or infringe on the IP of others," Taobao official stated.

The company's position appears to be an act of passive compliance with the illegal pirating of the iTunes accounts. Buyers were advised to use the accounts within twenty-four hours in order to utilize them before the credit cards were canceled.

A customer service representative for Taobao was quoted as saying, "Of course these accounts are hacked, otherwise how could they be so cheap?"

Also at issue is the likelihood that stolen credit card information may have been used to set up fraudulent accounts, which are also offered for sale on the Taobao site.

Apple claims to have previously strengthened security measures by requiring the three or four digit security code from the back of the credit card if a purchase was being made from a computer not previously used for purchases.

It is unclear if this measure is preventing fraudulent purchases from the stolen accounts, and Apple declined to comment on the issue.
