CNN Money.com released its pick for the 50 best jobs in America.   IT won 3 of the 10 spots, with  Computer/Network Security Consultant coming in at number 8.  They describe the job as “protecting computer systems and networks against hackers, spyware, and viruses” and list pre-requisites for the job as “major geekdom”.  This is a great spotlight on our profession and it highlights the importance of our responsibilities.    I’m a bit disappointed however, that they focus on computer and network security and not information security as a whole.  Perhaps the “non-geeks” out there don’t quite understand yet that Security involves protecting much more than networks and computers, or perhaps its just that fighting off hackers and viruses is the most glamorous part of our jobs.  All things considered, Security Professionals everywhere should be proud that our profession, hobby, and passion continue to be recognized as a vital part of doing business today.  And with a median salary just under six-figures, I guess it’s a great time to be a geek.
